By locating in the Port Authority's Free Zones, investors automatically benefit from the trade concessions which Jamaica enjoys as a result of various international agreements.
The Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act(CBI) and the Enterprise of the Americas Initiatives (EAI) assures duty free entry into the United States for items manufactured by the 27 CBI countries, on which the local value added is at least 35%. It covers all products except textiles and apparel, canned fish, petroleum products, watch and watch parts.
The United States/Jamaica Bilateral Textile Agreement governs levels of access for textile and apparel items manufactured in Jamaica and exported to the United States. It allows for additional concessions for those categories of items under quota in the United States.
The Canadian assistance program to Commonwealth countries in the region provides duty free entry into Canada for goods wholly produced in Jamaica or 60% of the value of which is made in Jamaica or Canada. Textiles, garments, lubricating oils, footwear, luggage, handbags and leather products are excluded under the facility.
The Lome Convention between the European Economic Community and 46 developing African, Caribbean and Pacific States allows Jamaican exports, which meet the rules of origin criteria for sufficient processing, duty free entry to the community's member countries. This concession covers all items except petroleum products and special provisions allow for annual quotas on bananas, rum and sugar.
